Please tell me if I have a software firewall in addition to a router on my Internet connection?

I read and heard that the use of a router is an excellent firewall. I have a Linksys WRT 54 G I just read on the forums as the "Y" The answers, the rich and the many negative comments about McAfee Anti-Virus. I envisage the removal of McAfee from my computer, and research on the best course, so doing they have discovered, I also have McAfee Personal Firewall Plus. They said the McAfee removal tool will remove all the applications you use McAfee. SPECIFIC My question is: what is the reason to have a software based firewall in addition to using a router? Is to improve their security? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Do you have any recommendations on any particular personal firewall, free for personal use in XP-SP2? Thanks for your advice.
